About the Blue Flag
This is the seventh year that the Herzliya Marina is flying the Blue Flag (since 2013), and the fifth year (since 2015) that the Acadia North and Acadia Center beaches are also flying the Blue Flag!
The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) Blue Flag represents a unique voluntary, international environmental-educational program for the coastal environment. The Blue Flag aims to raise environmental awareness among beach users, the communities surrounding the beaches and beach operators, while encouraging good environmental management.
The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches, marinas and yacht owners that meet the stringent safety, sanitary and environmental education requirements. Among other things, the criteria pertain to water quality, accessibility for the disabled, recycling bins and protecting the coastal environment. The Blue Flag is currently flown by more than 4560 beaches, marina and yachts in more than 45 countries, among them 50 sites in Israel!
Herzliya municipality and the Herzliya Municipal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. are committed to protecting and developing the coastal environment, while meeting the strict standards posed by the FEE in the Blue Flag program, among them: maintaining high standards for maintenance of the marina and the beaches while ensuring clear water, energy savings, using materials that do not harm the environment, preserving coastal resources for sustainable development and providing beach accessibility.
Furthermore, Herzliya municipality and the Herzliya Municipal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. act extensively to promote educational programs about the marine and coastal environment, among them: lectures about the marine environment for sailors, educational programs for schools, lectures for senior citizens and field tours to Tel Michal and the beaches. The municipality and the corporation also carry out numerous activities to bring the special needs population closer to the coastal environment, producing regattas suited for persons with a disability, ensuring accessibility to the beaches through an audio system for persons with visual impairment, placing dedicated wheelchairs for swimming in the sea and providing access to reach the water.
The Herzliya Municipal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. collaborates with the School of Sustainability at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya to promote marine environment issues among students in the aim of harnessing quality human resources for the Blue Flag project.
Herzliya municipality and the Herzliya Municipal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. conduct wide-ranging activities to raise awareness about environmental protection through widespread “City without Plastic” campaigns, campaigns to clean beaches and the coast, placing stations of shared toys collected on the beaches for public use through the “Sharing Toy” project, and much more.
