About the “Blue Flag” program
The “Blue Flag” is an international quality certificate indicating environmental excellence among beaches and marinas.
Soon the Herzliya Marina will join 3,850 marinas and beaches in Israel and other 45 countries who were recognized by the international FEE organization, the initiator of the Blue Flag – the Foundation of Environmental Education that promotes environmental education and awareness for sustainability.
The EcoOcean Association is the exclusive representative of the FEE organization in Israel – a nonprofit organization acting for healthy marina environment through research and operating and appropriate education.
The “Blue Flag” is granted to beaches and marinas that meet the strict demands of safety, sanitation and environmental education.
Among all others, these demands are dealing with water quality requirements, accessibility for the disabled, recycling bins, protecting the algae and corals and more. The purpose of the “Blue Flag” is to inspire environmental awareness among the visitors of the beaches, among the communities living by the seashore and the to encourage the beaches’ managers to maintain an adequate environmental maintenance. The criteria were set for a mutual cooperation of all parties involved, including governments, local authorities and communities.
Other countries who were honored with the “Blue Flag”: Denmark, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland, New Zealand, Romania, Puerto Rico, Italy and South Africa.
The Municipal Company for Tourism Development in Herzliya was preparing for receiving the “Blue Flag” in May 2013.
